Student Center

University of Portland

After the completion of the University of Portland’s Dundon-Berchtold Hall, which carries forward the Gothic character of the campus’s older buildings, the design team was invited to propose a design concept for a new student center. The site, on a bluff overlooking the Willamette River, is adjacent to the school’s chapel, a fine example of regional Modernism designed by renowned architect Pietro Belluschi late in his career and completed in 1985. The proposal is sensitively sited to complement, and not to overwhelm, the chapel, which terminates one end of the campus’s central quad. Stylistically, the proposed design mediates between the Gothic and the Modern, with walls of glass that give the building a sense of transparency and bring daylight into lounges, a dining hall, and faculty offices. At the same time, the student center is as richly detailed inside and out as the campus’s historic Gothic buildings. Terraces facing the bluff provide outdoor spaces where students can gather to enjoy views across the river to the city beyond.
