Life Magazine inaugurated its annual “Dream House” feature by commissioning Robert A.M. Stern Architects to design a small, affordable house for all America. Gary Brewer worked with Bob Stern as Project Architect to design a compact shingled mass relieved by porches and shuttered windows and dormers, and to prepare plan sets for purchase by property owners and local builders. These drawings were adaptable to a variety of different but typical site conditions, offered options for detailing and finish appropriate to a range of building budgets, and even suggested a number of stylistic variations. The design proved very popular, with several thousand plan sets sold and many variations built across the country without the firm’s direct involvement. One example was constructed under their supervision by Macauley Homes in the Legacy Park planned neighborhood in Kennesaw, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta.
