SHINGLE-STYLE HOUSE OVERLOOKING LAKE MICHIGAn

Sleeping Bear Dunes, Michigan

This design from early in Gary Brewer’s career shows how he absorbed the lessons of great historic houses to develop faithful interpretations of traditional American architectural approaches. Here he created an authentic rendition of the Shingle Style—the renowned “architecture of the American summer”—to complement the natural beauty of America’s “third coast.” The rambling house sits comfortably in its bucolic setting: its picturesque silhouette echoes the undulations of the dunes, and the apparent mass of the house is reduced by tucking the upper-floor rooms into gambrels and dormers. The wings are inflected to embrace the arrival court, and the plans are organized to favor views to the lake, with the major first-floor rooms opening to a broad terrace that culminates in a circular entertainment porch. This early design presents themes that Gary would go on to develop further for a good number of his most significant projects and hopes to continue exploring for future clients.
