Residences
on St. Philip Street

Charleston, South Carolina

One of three new apartment buildings that will complete the second phase of development at Charleston’s Courier Square, this three-story residential building is conceived to fit in with its single-family neighbors. The building’s mass is expressed as three pavilions, defining two courtyards, to match the scale of the houses and side-yards across St. Philip Street. Many apartments feature outdoor terraces or porches; stacked porches—adapted from Charleston’s “single-house” type—enliven the clapboard facades, and double-hung windows are outfitted with operable shutters. Under Gary Brewer’s leadership, RAMSA won the concept design competition for this site, which will be taken forward by a local firm.
